ABOUT ME
My strength is seeing lots of places and people through a special lens. This allows me to capture the moment before it's gone. Sometimes I can take a picture of the same place or same object but the image will have a completely different impact depending on the mood I am able to create.
I first took up Photography for GCSE in 2013 because I was looking to do something creative; I chose it because I knew it would be great way to communicate. I learnt about editing, researching and even photographing in different styles. I realised that this is what I want to do as a career. Studying Art and Design in my first year of College showed me that there is so much involved in taking a photograph. I realised that it's an art form and and I was able to learn techniques to create strong and exciting photographs which could show what inspires me. After finishing my year in Art and Design, I went on to Photography Level 3 and I was ready to embrace the world of photography. The course was spread over a space of two years and in the first year I learnt the basics of working with a camera, experimenting with different techniques and learning the history and the artists that have influenced people. The second year was all about finding my own vision: taking in what I had learnt from the first year and expanding into something of my own. I was encouraged and inspired to be different and ambitious in my work. It was also the first time I had exhibited work of my own at an end of year show. I found that exhibiting work is a great creative outlet and really helps to motivate me. From GCSE to the end of the BTEC Level 3, my motivation was (and still is) to understand the outside world: the society that we live in. I created images mainly from urban landscapes which I found stimulating, exciting or depressing. After the Level 3 I went onto the HNC. This has allowed me to be independent whilst learning more sophisticated techniques including flashguns and lighting. I won two London and South East area awards for my commitment and hard work. I was surprised but really proud. It feels great that people understand that my photography is part of me and that has helped me to express myself. I am a photographer and this is what I do. After completing the HNC course, I then did HND Photography. I focused on a wide range of subjects and using various methods like shutter speed. During the course, the Coronavirus pandemic forced the world into lockdown. A weeks into lockdown. It was a troubling time but it taught me how to work more online. I exhibited my show online. I then went onto the BA (Hons) in Art & Design. As this was during the pandemic, I worked both online and at the college campus. My main projects included a dissertation and my main project which was comparing the pandemic and the Second World War. I recorded both my grandmothers talking about their experiences during the war. One of my grandmothers is German and the other grandmother is English so it made for a very interesting comparison in their experiences. Following my graduation as a BA (Hons) student, I was appointed as 'artists in residence' at the school of creative industries at Kingston College. |
